This guide works for all modern MPC hardware configurations, including: MPC One, One+, Live I/II/3, X, X SE, XL, Key 37, Key 61, and XL series.
CRITICAL GOLDEN RULE
Never install your expansions directly onto your MPC's internal factory drive! The internal drive is reserved only for system firmware and built-in factory library content. You must use an external storage medium such as a formatted USB drive, SD Card, or an internally installed SATA SSD/HDD.
PHASE 1: Account Setup & Registering Content
- Go to the official inMusic Profile Portal.
- Log in or create a brand new inMusic Profile.
- If registering hardware or official expansion content, click Register New Product and type your serial number (usually starting with a bracketed code like
(21)).
- Navigate to your central profile dashboard to locate your download files, product keys, and setup files.
PHASE 2: Choosing Your Installation Style
Select Method A (for XPN files) or Method B (for direct folders)
Method A: The ".XPN" File Style
Recommended for tidy imports via MPC Desktop Software
-
1. Install Drivers & Software: Download the installer directly from your inMusic profile or find it via the Akai Professional Downloads Page. Run the installer and ensure the box for your specific MPC hardware model is ticked to install the dedicated system drivers.
-
2. Import into Desktop Software: Launch your **MPC Desktop Software**. Drag your
.XPN file anywhere into the main software interface. Confirm the import window popups.
-
3. Export to Storage: Attach your USB/SD storage device to your computer. In the software, go to the top menu and click Tools > Expansion Manager. Select Export to Standalone, tick your target drive, choose your expansions, and hit **Export**. The software formats and creates an optimized
Expansions folder automatically on the drive root.
Method B: Standalone Folder Style
For manual drag-and-drop standalone folders
-
1. Format the Drive: The hardware OS reads specific file systems. Format your USB flash drive or SD Card to exFAT or FAT32 (exFAT is highly recommended for modern storage over 32GB).
-
2. Create Target Directories: Open your newly formatted storage drive on your desktop computer. Create a new directory folder directly on the absolute root level of your drive. Label it exactly:
Expansions (case-sensitive and plural).
-
3. Move Expansion Files: Open your newly made folder and place your standalone expansion folder inside it. Ensure you have the audio, WAVs, and program keys safely housed in the directory.

PHASE 3: Syncing To Your MPC Hardware
Connect and load your new expansions directly on your machine
Technique 1: Standalone USB / SD Drive Transfer
Perfect for quick mobile transfers
- Safely eject your USB or SD Card from your computer.
- Insert the drive directly into any open USB Host / SD Port on the back of your MPC hardware.
- Power on the MPC, hit Browser (or Menu ➔ Browser), and head to the Places tab on the left to confirm your drive is indexed.
- Tap the dedicated Expansions tab. Your custom expansions will load complete with artwork and layouts!
Technique 2: USB Cable & Controller Mode Sync
Best for internally installed SATA SSD drives
- Connect the square end of your included high-speed USB 3.0 cable into your hardware's USB Slave Port, and connect the other end into your PC.
- Turn on the MPC, hit Menu, and tap the MPC Chip Icon in the upper right.
- Click **Controller Mode** to mount your internal SATA SSD or SD card directly to your desktop.
- Eject the drive safely when done, and tap **Standalone** to access untethered workflow instantly.
